Nature Inspired Chunky Crochet Throw

A chunky wool blend crochet throw is everything in cold winter. I was inspired by nature and designed this throw using a few colors. When designing this chunky throw I did not use repeating colors pattern but mixed and matched them to make this throw unique.

You can make the exact throw using the same colors as in a pattern or you can use different colors and make your own design. Also, this throw can be made using only one color.

You can make this beautiful throw for yourself or as a gift to someone. The ads free written pdf printable pattern is available on Etsy here. To get the desired pattern it is important to crochet the crossed over double crochet stitches as instructed. Please see How to crochet a stitch Instructions below.

For this throw I am using chunky, weight 5 yarn and US J 10 – 6 mm crochet hook. The finished throw is 44 inches wide and 53 inches long. I used approximately 1,700 yards of the yarn. The pattern used to crochet this nature inspired throw is multiples of 2 ; therefore, if making a different size please use multiples of 2 plus 1.

This pattern is written in American Standard Terms. When crocheting this pattern please count crossed double crochet stitch as 2 double crochet stitches and count 2 chains as a double crochet stitch.

How to crochet dc = double crochet stitch: Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through two loops. Yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through two loops. You can also see a quick short tutorial here.

How to crochet xdc = crossed double crochet stitch: Skip one stitch, dc into the next stitch, then dc into the skipped stitch as follows: yarn over, insert your hook into the skipped stitch, and loop yarn again (3 loops on the hook). Finish the double crochet as you would normally do: yarn over, pull through the first two loops, yarn over, and pull through the last two loops. This stitch is demonstrated as a first way to make xdc in a video tutorial here.

How to crochet xdcb = crossed double crochet stitch working the 2nd dc behind the first dc: Skip one stitch, dc into the next stitch, then dc into the skipped stitch as follows: Yarn over and come back to the stitch you skipped from the behind of a double crochet stitch you made, insert the hook into the stich from the front of the stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops. Continue by skipping a stitch, making a dc and coming back to the stitch you skipped. You can see a short tutorial how to crochet this stitch here.

How to crochet xdcf = crossed double crochet front stitch: Yarn over, skip the next stitch and insert the hook into the following stitch and made a dc stitch. Yarn over, come back to the stitch you skipped from the front of the double crochet stitch you made, insert hook into the stitch from behind and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through first two loops, yarn over and pull through last two loops.
