Crochet Pocket Shawl in Mustard

I am really happy about this pocket shawl in mustard. It was a lot of fun designing it and I could not wait to see the final result. I was inspired by my previous Sandy Shore crochet pocket shawl pattern. Sandy Shore is a pocket shawl featured in a picture above in linen color.

To crochet the pocket shawl in mustard I was using medium, weight 4 yarn and I 9 / 5.5 mm crochet hook. You can get a printable adds free written pattern for this crochet pocket shawl in mustard here. The printable pdf written pattern also includes a lot of pictures.

The finished crochet pocket shawl in mustard is 61 inches long, not including fringe, and 17 inches wide.

Again, to crochet the pocket shawl in mustard I am using medium, weight 4, Big Twist, soft acrylic yarn but you can use any medium, weight 4 yarn. I used approximately 1,100 yards of the Big Twist yarn.

This pattern is written in American Standard Terms. The crochet pocket shawl in mustard pattern is multiples of 2 and I start with 200 chains but if you prefer to make a longer shawl, add more chains using multiples of 2. In this pattern starting with the Row 2 through Row 6 you should crochet the half double crochet stitches into a back loop. Also, in this pattern count a crossed over double crochet stitch as 2 double crochet stitches and count the chain of 2 as a double crochet stitch.

When crocheting this pocket shawl in mustard it is important to work xdcfp and xdc as instructed to get the desired pattern

Main Stitches used to Crochet this Pocket Shawl

How to crochet hdc = half double crochet stitch: Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through all three loops.

How to crochet dc = double crochet stitch: Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through two loops. Yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through two loops.

How to crochet xdc = crossed double crochet stitch working the 2nd dc behind the first dc: Skip one stitch, dc into the next stitch, then dc into the skipped stitch as follows: Yarn over and come back to the stitch you skipped from the behind of a double crochet stitch you made, insert the hook into the stich from the front of the stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops. Continue by skipping a stitch, making a dc and coming back to the stitch you skipped.

How to crochet xdcfp = crossed double crochet front post stitch: Yarn over, skip the next stitch and insert the hook into the following stitch and made a dc. Yarn over, come back to the stitch you skipped from the front of the dc stitch you made, insert the hook between the previous row’s 1st and 2nd dc and from front to back to front around the post of the 2nd dc and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops. Continue by skipping a stich, making a dc and coming back with a front post dc.

Abbreviations

ch = chain stitch

hdc = half double crochet

BLO = back loop only

dc = double crochet

xdcfp – crossed double crochet dc, working the second double crochet in front of the first dc and making the second a front post dc. Note that only the 2nd dc should be the front post dc, the 1st dc is a regular dc.  The printable pdf written pattern includes the pictures how to crochet this stitch.

xdc – crossed double crochet stitch working the second double crochet in the skipped stitch behind the first stitch. The printable pdf written pattern includes the pictures how to crochet this stitch.

fp = front post

st – stitch

sts – stitches

** = repeat instructions between asterisk to finish the row

Pattern Instructions

Again, please note that you can purchase adds free written pattern with a lot of picture for each step here.

Start this crochet pattern with the chain of 200 plus 1.

Start Row 1 by insert the hook in the 3rd chain from the hook, 1hdc in each chain to the end of the row (199 hdc not counting the chain 2); ch 2, turn

Row 2 to Row 6: hdc in BLO of the 1st hdc and in each hdc BLO across (199 hdc not counting the 2 chains); ch 2, turn  

R7: dc in previous row’s hdc and in each hdc across (200 counting 2 ch as a stitch); ch 2, turn

R8: dc in each dc across (200); ch 2, turn

R9: xdcfp across by working the second dc as a front post dc (Start in 3rd dc and come back into 2nd dc, work the second dc as a front post dc), finish the row with dc in last st (200 dc); ch 2, turn  

R10: xdc across (work xdc as it was noted in “How to crochet” above. Work xdc in previous row’s crossed over dc), dc in last st (200dc); ch 2, turn   

R11: *fp, dc* repeat. Make sure the fp is worked in the 1st previous rows crossed over stitch and a dc into the second. (200dc); ch 2, turn 

R12 through R14: dc in each dc across (200dc); ch 2, turn    

R15 to R 32: Continue repeating Row 9 through Row 14 three times (Total 4). You can repeat more times if you desire to have a wider shawl.

R33: Repeat Row 9;

R34: Repeat Row 10;

R35: Repeat Row 12;

R36 to R40: Repeat Row 2

Finishing: Fasted off, with yarn needle, weave in all loose ends.

Pockets

Start the pocket by chaining 26 plus 1.

R1: 1dc in 3rd chain and to each chain across (26dc); ch 2, turn

R2: dc in each dc across (26dc); ch 2, turn

R3: xdcfp across by starting in 3rd dc and come back into 2nd making a front post dc; dc in last st (26dc), ch 2, turn 

R4: xdc across (work xdc in previous row’s crossed over stitch), dc in last st (26dc); ch 2, turn

R5: *fp, dc* repeat (26dc); ch 2, turn (front post should be worked in the 1st previous row’s crossed over stitch, and a dc into the second)

R6: dc in each st across (26dc); ch 2, turn  

R7: dc in each dc across (26dc); ch 2, turn  

R8: dc in each dc across (26dc); ch 2, turn  

R9: Repeat Row 3;

R10: Repeat Row 4;

R11: Repeat Row 5

R12 through 14: Repeat Row 6, fasten off

Following the directions above crochet the second pocket.

Finishing: With yarn needle, weave in all loose ends. Sew the pockets to the shawl with the same yarn and large needle. Make sure the pockets are sewn straight following the shawl’s pattern line. 

Fringe: Once the shawl is complete add the fringe using the same yarn and the hook. Cut 17” length fringes and divide into groups of 3. Fold the fringe group in half to form a loop. Draw the center of a fringe group through the edge of the shawl, using the crochet hook. Thread fringe tails through the loop and tighten to secure. Repeat for each group of fringe.
