Crochet Pocket Shawl in Purple

How to Crochet a Stitch Instructions
How to crochet hdc = half double crochet stitch: Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through all three loops.
How to crochet dc = double crochet stitch: Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through two loops. Yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through two loops.
How to crochet crossed dc = crossed double crochet stitch: Yarn over, skip the next stitch and insert hook into the following stitch and make a double crochet stitch. Yarn over, come back to the stitch you skipped from the front of the double crochet stitch you made, insert hook into the stitch from behind and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through first two loops, yarn over and pull through last two loops. Note that other patterns call making the crossed double crochet stitch slightly differently.

- The pattern is in multiples of 2 (if you prefer to make a longer shawl use multiples of 2).
- Row 2 to Row 6 crochet a half double crochet stitch into the back loop.
- The last 6 Rows of the pocket shawl crochet a half double crochet into the back loop.

dc = double crochet
BLO = back loop only
crossed dc = crossed double crochet

Start by chaining 200+2
R1: Insert the hook into the 3rd chain from the hook, 1hdc in each chain across (200hdc); 2ch, turn.
R2 to R6: 1hdc in first stitch BLO and into each st BLO across (200hdc); 2ch, turn.
R7: 1dc into a very first stitch (in other patterns this stitch is usually skipped), 1ch, skip 1st, *1dc, 1ch, skip 1st* repeat to the end, finish the row with 2 dc; 2ch, turn (You should have 99 squares in Row 7 and 102 dc st’s counting chain 2 as a double crochet stitch).
R8: 1dc into the first stitch and into each stitch across (200); 2ch, turn.
R9: Crossed dc the entire row, finish the row with 1dc; 2ch, turn.
R10: 1dc into the first stitch and entire row across (200), 2ch, turn.
R11 to R30: Repeat the pattern starting Row R7 to Row 10. You can repeat more times if you desire to have a wider shawl.
R31: Repeat row 7.
R32 to R37: Repeat Row 2.
Finishing: With yarn needle, weave in all loose ends.
Pockets
Start by chaining 32+1
R1: Insert the hook into the 3rd chain from the hook, 1hdc in into the 3rd chain and to each chain across (32); 2ch, turn.
R2: 1dc into the first st and to each st across (32), 2ch, turn.
R3: Crossed dc the entire row, finish the row with 1dc; 2ch, turn.
R4: Repeat Row 2.
R5: Repeat Row 3.
R6: Repeat Row 2.
R7: Repeat Row 3.
R8: Repeat Row 2.
R9: Repeat Row 3.
R10: Repeat Row 2.
R11: 1dc, 1ch, skip 1 st, *1dc, 1ch, skip 1 st* repeat to the end, finish the row with 2 dc; 2ch, turn.
R12: Repeat Row 2.
R13: Repeat Row 3.
R14: Repeat Row 2.
R15: Repeat Row 11.
R16 to R17: 1hdc into the first st and in each st across (32), 2ch, turn.
R18: 1hdc into the first st and in each st across.
Finishing: With yarn needle, weave in all loose ends. Sew the pockets to the shawl with the same yarn and large needle. Make sure the pockets are sewn straight following the shawl’s pattern line.
Fringe: Once the shawl is complete add the fringe using the same yarn and the hook. Cut 16” length fringes and divide into groups of 3. Fold the fringe group in half to form a loop. Draw the center of a fringe group through the edge of the shawl, using the crochet hook. Thread fringe tails through the loop and tighten to secure. Repeat for each group of fringe.
