Yarn and Materials for Crochet Baby Headband

Using a U.S. G6 (4 mm) crochet hook, the headband works up quickly and features charming shell stitches – stitch markers are helpful for keeping these shells evenly spaced. A yarn needle is used to neatly weave in all loose ends for a polished finish. The finished headband measures approximately 2–3 inches wide and 12–17 inches long, making it adjustable for different baby sizes.

With a gauge of 5 stitches and 2 rows per inch (2.5 cm), this pattern is perfect for creating a comfortable, well-fitting accessory that’s as cute as it is practical.

Before you begin, please take a moment to review the pattern notes below to ensure the best results. This pattern is written using American Standard crochet terms, so be sure to follow U.S. stitch terminology throughout. When working the rows, chain 2 counts as one double crochet stitch, which helps maintain consistent stitch counts and even edges.

For the most comfortable and accurate fit, it’s important to try the headband around the baby’s head before joining the ends into a circle, as head sizes can vary and this allows for easy adjustment. Finally, when creating the decorative shell stitches, be sure to insert your hook directly into the actual stitch rather than between the double crochet posts—this will give the crown a cleaner, more defined look and help the shells stand out beautifully.

Start the first row with dc in the 3rd chain and work dc across. Then ch2, turn your work and crochet dc in next dc BLO and each dc BLO across. Continue repeating the second row until the desired length is reached.

Measure the crochet band around the baby’s head for the perfect fit. See additional length details for this pattern on Etsy here.

Once the length is determined, join the headband sides into a circle with a slip stich (making sure the ends are aligned perfectly) as follows: turn your work and insert the hook into a first stitch and into the first stitch on the opposite side, then make a sl st. Continue into a 2nd st in the same way, and continue until you reach the end.

Begin working the shell stitches along the top edge of the headband. Each shell will use slightly more than 2.5 rows. When making the shell stitches insert your hook into the actual stitch rather than between the dc posts. Use stitch markers to divide the edge evenly for the number of shells you plan to make.

How to crochet a shell stitch

Insert hook into the middle of the marked space along the edge of a headband. Work 5 double crochets (5 dc) into that space to create a shell, sl st into the marked space and then work the next shell into the next marked space. Repeat around.  Finish the round with sl st. For additional details on how to crochet the shell stitch pattern visit Etsy here or use the free YouTube tutorial here.

Start crocheting around along the edge of the shell stiches as follows: make 3 chains and sl st in next stitch, *3ch, sl st in next st*, repeat around to the end. Fasten off.
