How to for beginners

How to crochet hdc = half double crochet stitch: Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through all three loops.

How to crochet dc = double crochet stitch: Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through two loops. Yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through two loops.

How to crochet xdcb = crossed double crochet stitch working the 2nd dc behind the first dc: Skip one stitch, dc into the next stitch, then dc into the skipped stitch as follows: Yarn over and come back to the stitch you skipped from the behind of a double crochet stitch you made, insert the hook into the stich from the front of the stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the last two loops. How to crochet xdcf = crossed double crochet front stitch: Yarn over, skip the next stitch and insert hook into the following stitch and made a dc stitch. Yarn over, come back to the stitch you skipped from the front of the double crochet stitch you made, insert hook into the stitch from behind and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through first two loops, yarn over and pull through last two loops. Pattern Instructions

R1: Insert the hook into the 3rd chain from the hook, 1hdc in each chain across (199hdc not counting the 2 chains); 2ch, turn;

R2 to R6: hdc into BLO of the first hdc and into each hdc BLO across (199hdc not counting the 2 chains); 2ch, turn;   

R7: 1dc in hdc st and in each hdc across; 2ch, turn (200 counting 2 ch’s as a stitch);

R8: xdcf across by starting in 3rd dc and come back into 2nd dc, finish the row with dc in last st (200 dc); ch 2, turn;

R9: xdcb across (work xdcb as it was noted in “How to crochet” above. Work xdcb in previous row’s xdcf), dc in last st (200dc); ch 2, turn;

R10: dc in each st across (200dc);

R11: ch 2, turn; xdcb across, dc in last st (200dc);

R12: ch 2, turn; xdcf across by starting in 3rd dc and come back into 2nd dc, finish the row with dc in last st (200 dc);

R13 to R36: Continue repeating Row 7 to Row 12 four times (total 5 times). You can repeat more times if you desire to have a wider shawl.

R37: dc in each st across (200dc); ch 2, turn;  

R38 to R43: Repeat Row 2. Fasted off, with yarn needle, weave in all loose ends.

1st Pocket

Start by chaining 26+1. Row 1: 1dc in 3rd chain and in each chain across (26dc);

R2: ch 2, turn; xdcf across by starting in 3rd dc and come back into 2nd dc; dc in last st (26dc); 

R3: ch 2, turn; xdcb across, dc in last st (26dc);

R4: ch 2, turn; dc in each st across (26dc);

R5: ch 2, turn; xdcb across, dc in last st (26dc);

R6: ch 2, turn; xdcf across by starting in 3rd dc and come back into 2nd dc, finish the row with dc in last st;

R7: ch 2, turn; dc in each st across (26dc);

R8 -R12: Continue repeat Row 2, Row 3, Row 4, Row 5, Row 6.

R13: Repeat Row 4;

R14 – R16: 2ch, turn; 1hdc in 2nd dc BLO and in each dc BLO across (25hdc, not counting 2ch).

2nd Pocket

We will crochet the second pocket slightly differently. Start by chaining 26+1.

R1: 1dc in 3rd chain and to each chain across (26dc);

R2: ch 2, turn; xdcb across by starting in 3rd dc and come back into 2nd dc; dc in last st (26dc);

R3: ch 2, turn; xdcf across, dc in last st (26dc);

R4: ch 2, turn; dc in each st across (26dc);

R5: ch 2, turn; xdcf across, dc in last st (26dc);

R6: ch 2, turn; xdcb across by starting in 3rd dc and come back into 2nd dc, finish the row with dc in last st;

R7: ch 2, turn; dc in each st across (26dc);

R8 – R12: Repeat Row 2, Row 3. Row 4, Row 5, Row 6.

R13: Repeat Row 4.

R14: 1hdc in 2nd dc BLO and in each dc BLO across (25hdc, not counting 2ch), 2ch, turn.

R15: 1hdc in 2nd hdc BLO and in each hdc BLO across (25hdc, not counting 2ch), 2ch, turn.

R16: 1hdc in 2nd hdc BLO and in each hdc BLO across (25hdc, not counting 2ch), fasten off.

Finishing: With yarn needle, weave in all loose ends. Sew the pockets to the shawl with the same yarn and large needle. Make sure the pockets are sewn following the shawl’s pattern line and facing the wright side up.

Fringe: Once the shawl is complete add the fringe using the same yarn and the hook. Cut 17” length fringes and divide into groups of 3. Fold the fringe group in half to form a loop. Draw the center of a fringe group through the edge of the shawl, using the crochet hook. Thread fringe tails through the loop and tighten to secure. Repeat for each group of fringe.
